New Bug Update
From The Word of Notch:
"The client version is now 1.2.4
The server version is now 0.2.6 (mandatory update, there’s been protocol changes)
Bug fix list:
* Swords and other weapons now deal damage properly
* Added proper hurt animations and sounds to mobs and players
* Fixed dead players logging in as invisible ghosts
* Made arrows visible and deal damage
* Hoes now produce proper seeds
* Creepers make noises and animate before exploding
* Explosions animate properly
* No more infinite free arrows
* Server logging now appends to server.log rather than overwriting it
* Buttons and levers (and a few other blocks probably, it’s a general solution) animate properly
* Fixed minecarts (and pigs!) moving twice as fast as they should when ridden.
* The join server screen now remembers the last entered ip
* Increased chunk saving frequency on the server
* Leaving sneak mode no longer triggers a million sounds
* You can now see sneaking players
* Names of sneaking players aren’t visible through walls, and are visible a much shorter distance
* Snowballs!!
I’ll monitor for bugs for a while, then head home!
[edit:]
Server 0.2.6_01 no longer gives everyone 64 snowballs on connecting
[edit:]
Server 0.2.6_02 and client 1.2.4_01 now spawn other monsters than ONLY CREEPERS EVERYWHERE"

Oh Notch, look what you've done!
"SMP Health Update is out. I’m expecting bugs on this one, so I’m monitoring the usual channels (irc, twitter, email) extra carefully.
Basically everything I talked about in the last post is done, with some extras such as visible hurt animations (how did I forget that?) and visible fire on burning mobs.
The lighting still isn’t right, I need to rewrite it. I think I know what the problem is now, though. Or rather, I know what ONE problem is. You know when you’re traveling by boat, and you see weird strips of light on the ocean floor in multiplayer? That.

Player versus Player enabled tomorrow!
From the Word of Notch:
"I tried to do a Minecraft update today, and it turns out I didn’t bring the keystore with the private certificate key to the office.. I set a reminder alarm on my cellphone to remind me tonight to bring it.
So.. Update tomorrow, with working SMP health, including fighting monsters and other players."
Prepare to do battle with and against both hostile mobs as well as your fellow minecrafters!

A lot of news today!
First of all, Notch has introduced one of his new employees today: Jens! You can read his introduction to the Minecraft community on Notch's development blog!
But that is not all! Notch has also fixed some known bugs and glitches! You can find a list of these on his blog, but if you're too lazy to browse to his website then here is a copy of Notch's post:

An update is coming tomorrow
From The Word of Notch:
First of all, most “mods” that add new features to the game are in a very gray area legally, and I frown upon them. Most of them add really cool new features, though. It’s highly likely that something like the bridge mod will make it into the game.
Now, the update.
I was going to release this today, but it’s 6 pm already and my fiancĂ©e turns 30 today (I love you, ez!), so I’ll go eat a nice dinner instead. Here’s what’s already done for the update:

The Halloween Update is out!
From the Word of Notch:
"The minecraft.net server is a bit overwhelmed at the moment, so you might not be able to get in immediately.
There’s a whole pile of new content in this update, and a bunch of bugs in multiplayer got fixed. Here’s what I managed to fit in:
Next up, I will take a couple of days off, then get started on survival mode multiplayer and make a push towards reaching Beta. I will also finish moving minecraft.net over to the much faster server and DDOS protection I signed up for last week.
We’ll move in to our fancy new offices slightly ahead of schedule, on November 15. Initially, it’ll be just me, Daniel and Jakob, but about two weeks later, Jeb and <SECRET ARTIST NAME WITHHELD UNTIL HE’S QUIT HIS JOB> will join us."

Minecraft Halloween Update preview: meet the Ghasts
The original article from PC Gamer can be found here.
Oh God. As if Minecraft wasn’t terrifying enough, its creator Notch has just sent us screens and info about a new monster type he’s adding in the Minecraft Halloween Update on October 31st. The Ghasts are flying cuboid jellyfish that shoot fireballs at you, blowing chunks out of the world around you and setting it on fire. Luckily, they’re only found in hell. And Notch has told us exactly how to get there, why you’d want to go, and how portals to this new dimension are built. Here are the details, along with two exclusive shots.

DDoS Attack on minecraft.net?
So apparently minecraft.net is/was the victim of a DDoS-attack today. Exactly who did it and for what reason is unknown, however the following message has appeared on the internet in which an anonymous person claims responsibility for the attack. Whether or not the messenger is truly responsible is unknown.
